Hugh and Susan Dobbie founded the Dowco Group in 1970. Hugh embarked on his steel detailing career in 1956 when he began training as a steel detailer at the Dominion Bridge Company in Canada. He is a Registered Steel Detailer with the Steel Detailers Institute of BC and is certified with the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of BC. Hugh also has an MBA from Simon Fraser University.

Hugh is a Council Member of the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of B.C., and chairs the Board of Examiners for the Steel Detailers Institute of BC. He is also a member the Adjunct Sub-Committee charged with developing the American Institute of Steel Construction's online Detailers' Course.

He is a past chair of the National Steel Detailing Committee for the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) and currently serves as a Director of CISC.
