Unsolicited Email , or Spam – Tips and Tricks

Is your in-box clogged with junk email messages from people you don't know?  Are you overwhelmed by unsolicited email offering products or services you don't want?
One of the most talked about subjects for any tech support personnel is the ongoing struggle to keep unsolicited email, or spam, out of your inbox.
Here are some simple rules to think about in the war against spam

1. Stay under cover.
Posting your email address anywhere on the Internet will attract spam.  Share your email addresses only with people you know and trust.  Spammers collect email address using programs such as spiders, crawlers and bots that search the Internet for email addresses to add to their lists.  If you are swamped with spam, change you email address.

2. Turn off HTML email viewing in your email program.

3. Do NOT respond to a spam.

4. Do NOT use the unsubscribe link included in a spam.

5. Do NOT visit the web sites linked to a spam.

6. Always run antivirus software and keep it up-to-date.

7. Always run anti-spyware software and keep it up-to-date.

8. Don't fill out online forms without understanding the site's privacy policies.

9. Don't post your email address online.

10. Don't buy things advertised through spam.

11. Use anti-spam filtering.
