2006 BC Region CISC Steel Design Awards

Each year the BC Region of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, hosts their annual awards night to showcase steel projects that illustrate ingenuity and innovation in the use of structural steel. Eligible projects must be either fabricated or detailed by BC Regional CISC members. This year, Dowco again submitted two projects for consideration. In the architectural category (ie Buildings, structures or bridges in which architectural considerations influenced the design of the structure), we submitted the very interesting and challenging Phoenix Convention Center Expansion Project. In the engineering category (ie Industrial buildings, bridges, process plants or other structures in which engineering considerations predominantly influenced the design and construction of the structure) we submitted the unique CitiGroup Long Island City 2 - phase 1 project. Although we did not win an award this year, both of these jobs demonstrated creative use in both the application of steel and the use of 3D Modeling technologies. Our thanks and congratulations go out to the Project Teams of each of these projects for jobs well done.
In addition to this year’s event, the CISC organized a half day luncheon seminar on ‘Virtual Design – Methodologies for Enhanced Project Success’ which was held before the awards of excellence for local architects, engineers, and construction professionals. The seminar / workshop featured three prominent speakers who shared their vision and experience with virtual design. Mark Holland, Paxton & Verling Steel, spoke on Interoperability and Model Integrity for the Steel Fabricator; Stacey Scopano, Tekla Inc, spoke on the direction of 3D Software Applications, and Ewen Dobbie, Dowco Consultants Ltd, spoke on the versatility in Application of 3D Modeling.
