Meet Our Staff

Rey Ople
Dowco Burnaby

I was born in the Philippines, the youngest of five children – three girls and two boys. When I was five years old, I thought of becoming a priest (fortunately I didn’t) and as I grew older I became fascinated with buildings and roads, and reasons why things work and fail, and that’s when I started to dream of becoming an engineer.

I earned my Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Adamson University in Manila. While some friends ended up in sales due to lack of work in the engineering field, it became my goal to land a job in my chosen field. I started as an Assistant Project Engineer while reviewing for my board exam and on passing it, I was promoted to Project Engineer. Four years later, I decided to enroll for post graduate studies. It was a struggle time wise but I believe learning does not end after graduation, and taking a step further in my profession has given me more confidence in the things I do. Such effort resulted in more responsibilities, adding structural design as part of my job, and this  opened the door for part time design outside our company.

Emigrating to Canada was one of the biggest changes I made as far as career is concerned.  I had to give up my dream job and practically start from zero. Love of my job though wasn’t greater than the love I had for my fiancée, whom I married in 1997. I then arrived in Canada last March 1998.  As a new immigrant, I needed to find a job preferably one related to my profession.  After weeks of working in a different field, I was hired by a Steel Detailing company only to be laid off three months later. Then I learned about VCC’s Structural Steel Detailing and CADD course so I immediately enrolled and six months later, I was re-hired.

I came to Dowco in January 2001 and it has been enjoyable working here. I like reading  books, listening to music, playing basketball, playing the guitar and bowling. We have a small garden at home where I putter around, plus I do whatever needs fixing in the house and with the car. In May this year my priorities changed -  instead of gardening or anything else for that matter, I now prefer spending time with my wife and our seven month old daughter Isabella.  God Bless us all.
