dowco.com News - Ron Cuthbert
I am currently in my 12th year working with the Dowco Group of Companies. Apart from a short 2-year stint working for Interactive Netcasting Systems (INSINC) from 1999 to 2001, my entire time has been spent working for Dowco Computer Systems Ltd. I first joined Dowco when it was one office with less than 40 employees. It has been very exciting to be part of the huge growth over the years.
After joining Dowco in 1995 as a programmer, the first project I was involved in was to rewrite Dowco Consultants APIP (Drawing Index Program) from its old PC DOS based application to a client / server network-based application. Apart from many upgrades APIP has had over the years, the basic functionality still exists today. Shortly thereafter, the vision for dowco.com Internet came around. At that time I didn’t know what an email address was, but in a few short months the company had a T1 (no better than today’s ADSL connections), a brand new Pentium 2 processor computer to run email, websites, etc; several 28.8Kbps modems (a huge improvement over the old 14.4Kbps modems) and an internet business. Customers started logging in with dowco.com Internet on September 5, 1995. It all happened so fast, that we all had to learn lots really quickly. It was a very exciting time.
In 1985 I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a B.Sc. in Computer Science, and started as a mainframe Programmer, before being promoted to Systems Analyst. I grew up in Cloverdale before it was the large community it has now become. Prior to this my family, Mom, Dad, myself and two younger brothers, emigrated from Scotland when I was 7 years old. We are still well connected to our Scottish roots. I now live in Burnaby with my wife, teenage daughter and 10-year-old son.
I grew up with a love of the game of soccer. I was always actively involved as a player from the youngest age to the present, now playing in a competitive Over-35’s league. I had a good amateur career with various Provincial teams and Simon Fraser University. I even had a short stint playing semi-professional overseas in New Zealand. The travel was a great bonus, but the friendships and good times have been irreplaceable. I currently am involved as a Director with our local youth club and am also involved in coaching. It’s not unusual to be doing something with soccer 5 nights a week, plus weekends of course.
