Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC)

Annual General Meeting
The CISC Annual General Meeting was held June 9th -10th, 2006 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Although I have attended the CISC AGM for 26 years, this year was from a different perspective, as I attended officially as a CISC director. After many years of lobbying, detailers are now full members of the CISC with the same rights and privileges as other members. We now have a vote, and may sit on the board of directors. I believe this to be significant for detailers, who now have an opportunity to contribute to the strength of the institute and be recognized for the significant contribution they make to the industry.
The AGM provides an opportunity to be briefed on the ongoing business of the institute and to understand the challenges faced by each region across the country. In addition to the business portion of the AGM, there is ample opportunity for networking and participating in social events.
Following the chairman’s address by Ian Oulton on Saturday morning, we enjoyed an informative presentation by Rick Everdell, Project Director, Ontario Power Generation on the Niagara Tunnel Project. This $985 million project is for a 10.4 km long, 12.7 m internal diameter tunnel to divert water from Niagara Falls to the existing Sir Adam Beck Generating Station near Queenston. When completed in 2009, the Niagara Tunnel will deliver enough additional water to increase average annual energy output from the Sir Adam Beck Station by about 1.6 terra watt hours, enough energy to more than meet the needs of a city twice the size of Niagara Falls.
The AGM traditionally concludes with a Saturday evening gala. Following a fine meal entertainment was provided by the local band “Flat Broke,” (sounds like a group of freelance detailers!)
Next year the CISC AGM will be held in Kelowna, B.C.
