Tekla Structures - What's New: STAAD.Pro 2005
Arvin Eugenio Sales & Marketing
The August 2004 issue of ‘Details’ contained an article on STAAD.Pro. The world’s No. 1 engineering suite had undergone numerous modifications, and Research Engineers International (REI) is now set to release their 2005 version by the end of summer. This highly anticipated update will be more Canadian-friendly, incorporating codes that will definitely receive the “thumbs-up” from local Structural engineers/designers.
Question: In addition to Dowco’s reseller portfolio, what do you get when you combine market leaders Tekla Oy and REI?
Answer: Put together two top notch products – Tekla Structures and STAAD.Pro and voila! – you get ‘Tekla Structures for Engineering’!
Tekla Structures for Engineering is also the same as Tekla Structures with STAAD.Pro, in that the former is the brand name used by Tekla and the latter by REI.
What makes the stand-alone STAAD.Pro different from Tekla Structures with STAAD.Pro?
STAAD.Pro (stand-alone) is a ‘general-purpose’ 3D structural analysis and design program that can be used to model everything from houses to bridges to anything. Engineers prefer programs like STAAD.Pro because they can approach modeling from an analytical viewpoint. For example, engineers must specify joints to connect beams and plates between. Slabs and walls have to be modeled using plate or solid elements that have to be properly meshed in order to satisfy continuity and obtain realistic values.
On the other hand, most engineers like to approach their modeling from a more physical view point, just as they would with an erector set. This is the approach of Tekla Structures with STAAD.Pro.
‘An engineer therefore can simply place beams and columns on lines representing a grid surface. If an engineer wants to model a composite floor with underlying T-beams, he doesn’t have to worry about meshing the floor to get accurate results. The modeler (integrated in Tekla Structures) will handle the transition from the physical to the analytical model and back internally. Just model the floor as a concrete deck object! All analytical terms are now represented as physical objects such as walls, pad footings, decks, columns, beams and so on. Any analytical attributes such as design parameters, support conditions, loads, etc. can all be input through the new 3D modeler. After the analysis and design, the STAAD.Pro post-processor can be used to view the analytical results. The post-processor has been integrated into the Tekla Structures environment so there’s no need to worry about importing or exporting data back and forth. In addition, the model provides several downstream processes such as drafting and detailing of steel or concrete.
For those who design residential or commercial buildings, high rise structures, industrial complexes or petrochemical plants, Tekla Structures with STAAD.Pro is the product of choice enabling the flexibility to model the structure as if it were seen in the real-world’.
