TSS 1993 Boys Europe Tour
Sixteen talented twelve-year olds from B.C. toured Europe this August to play in tournaments and a series of exhibition games against top soccer clubs on the continent. For years (decades) Dowco has sponsored Langley soccer, and this year four boys from Langley participated in the Tournament, which comprised youth teams of some of the top soccer clubs in Europe eg Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, Ajax, PSV, Glasgow Rangers, Anderlecht, Barcelona, Schalke 04, Feyenoord, Bayer Leverkusen, Austria Vienna. Tournaments and exhibition games were held in Holland, Belgium and Germany. The tour was organized by head coach Bart Choufour of Total Soccer Systems (TSS Academy in Richmond, BC). The boys, coaches and parents attending all traveled venue to venue by bus daily through the three countries, playing a game a day, sometimes two, once three - an exhausting trip for all involved.
The boys traded shirts and training gear and penants, and will come back with great memories and learning experiences. Dowco was a proud sponsor of this event, which was attended by Ewen Dobbie, Exec. VP, supporting his son Andrew, one of the four talented Langley 12 year olds on the team. As far as the soccer goes, the boys had to adapt quickly to the faster speed and the very physical style played in Europe. They will definitely return different players. The team played a series of games, winning enough to meet their goal of qualifying for the final Main Tournament in Belgium. Their first opponent there was Everton before a full standing room only stadium...something our boys had never experienced before. They lost to Everton 1-0 but outplayed them, surprising the Everton coach who complimented them highly on their calibre of play. The boys played well against Liverpool but lost 2-0, but in the next game, they played tournament favourite Feyenoord and tied them, in front of a packed grandstand. Last game of the tournament was against Glasgow Rangers, where our Canadian boys came out strong and shut them down to win 4-0.
