TEAM BC KAYAKER - Kristin Bauder

When Dowco opened its Whonnock office, as part of our community awareness, we sponsored a couple of kayakers from the local Maple Ridge Canoe Club.  The Club (along with other local groups) still utilizes our gym facility free every week.  Shortly after, Dowco also sponsored Fort Langley Canoe Club by purchasing and donating to them a used mold from a renowned local canoe maker.  From this one mold, the Club has built several boats over the years, which are called The Dowco Piper.  The Club now also sells these boats to other clubs as a means of raising club funds.

The Canada Summer Games held in Regina the first week of this month, saw Fort Langley’s Kristin Bauder compete against some of the best paddlers in the country.  She joined forces with 19 other canoeists and kayakers to compose Team BC’s 20 members participating at the Games. The canoe and kayak races were held at Wascana Lake in the heart of Regina, a beautiful venue considered the “jewel” of the Games.

The Games proved to be a success for BC paddlers as they secured 11 medals in the events - the best performance ever for a canoeing squad from BC.  Kristin teamed up with partner Maggie Henderson (Maple Ridge) to bring home a complete medal set.  Gold was won in the Women’s K-2 200m race with an exciting come-from-behind victory.  The two teamed up again for a Silver medal in the Women’s K-2 500m race.  The pair were joined by Trina M’Lot (Fort Langley) and Nicole James (Nanaimo) for the Bronze medal in the Women’s K-4 500m race.  Bauder and Henderson just missed out on two other medals as they placed 4th in both the K-2 1000m race and the K-2 6000m race. It was truly a successful games for the girls as Bauder turned 16 while at the Games and Henderson is still 15, both much younger than the 18 year olds against whom they competed.

Kristin has returned home now and is preparing for the Canadian National Canoe/Kayak Championships to be held in Montreal at the end of this month.
