Meet Our Staff

Dave Arthur
Dowco Toronto
I was born in Ashwell, a small picturesque village in North Hertfordshire, England.
I attended Meridian Comprehensive School, leaving at age sixteen to join Jones Cranes ltd., a leading manufacturer of mobile cranes. After completing a 5 year apprenticeship as a plater I left to further my skills in heavy plate fabrication, joining SLK Engineering ltd., as a layout developer. Because of lack of work in the industry, I was laid off. Work was hard to find in the early 70’s. Unable to find work locally, I was forced to move south to Ashford in Kent, where I found a job as a structural steel fitter with Heyman Construction, travelling home across London every second weekend. One day during a tea break, one of the older fellers passed me the morning newspaper telling me that this is the job for you. There was a large advertisement for Babcock and Wilcox Canada Ltd. I applied and was hired as a plate fitter in December 1975.
I arrived in Canada on February 9th 1976. After 3 months as a plate fitter, I moved onto the layout tables as a layout developer in the plate shop. After a year in the plate shop I moved to the boiler shop, laying out nuclear and fossil fueled steam generators. After Babcock’s, I moved to Toronto joining John T. Hepburn Ltd. as an estimator in the mechanical division. I spent a number of years there then I was promoted to the structural steel division, which was the start of project management. While at Hepburn’s I met my wife Katherine, and in 1988 we married. Since Hepburn’s I worked with various steel fabricators including Marshall Steel and Dominion Bridge, in estimating and project management. I joined Dowco on April 16, 2001.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife, watching the English Premier league (come on Spurs!) and playing golf then more golf... though my game is struggling a bit this season.
