Got STAAD.Pro? Then check this out... Introducing Tekla Structures Modeler
Arvin Eugenio

Tekla Structures Modeler is a versatile 3D modeling system that enables the engineer to ‘physically’ model steel structures without having to use analytical concepts like nodes, breaking members, etc. This program allows the engineer to create an intelligent model of any size or complexity with ease and precision. This module is comprised of a 3D modeler with a relational and parametric database, automatic generation of general arrangement drawings and reports and the ability to model conceptual connections, cutouts, and fittings.  Changes in the model will automatically trigger the analysis module to redesign the model as well as update the GA drawings. Most importantly, it can work directly with your STAAD.Pro for analysis, design and results verification.  The Tekla Structures Modeler bundled with your STAAD.Pro can produce remarkable gains in efficiency and accuracy - which greatly increases overall productivity.

Most engineers like to approach their modeling from a more physical viewpoint. They want to build the model like it was done in an erector set. Tekla Structures Modeler takes this approach. Instead of merely modeling stick lines to represent columns and beams, any user can model any steel structure as a 3D object! All structures are now represented as physical objects such as walls, pad footings, decks, columns, beams and so on. Once the model is done, simply export the file into an FEM or CimSteel file and imported into STAAD.Pro.  Any analytical attributes like design parameters, support conditions, loads, etc. can all be input through STAAD.Pro. After the analysis and design is performed, STAAD.Pro can be used to view the analytical results. For people who design residential or commercial buildings, high rise structures, industrial complexes or petrochemical plants, the Tekla Structures Modeler + CIS2 Link bundled with your existing STAAD.Pro is perfect because it gives you the flexibility to model the structure like you would see it in the real-world.

> Intelligent Model

Tekla Structures features a unique fully object-oriented parametric model-based architecture, which allows you to create an intelligent 3D model. The intelligence keeps the model consistent whenever you make changes. Move a beam and all your connections and affected drawings will update themselves automatically. Tekla Structures makes carrying out the routine design work simple and leaves you the freedom to concentrate on more complex issues. An additional benefit from the architecture is the capability to handle large models. There's no need to split your models in smaller pieces. You can create multiple structures (disjointed) within the same model and analyze portions of each separately. Tekla Structures efficiently manages the data size of large models. When archiving models, you don't have to struggle with disc space problems or even sharing your model with client or partners who do not own a copy of the software. With a powerful built-in Web-viewer, others can clearly walk-through the model in real-time without having to install the system on their local computer.

  • Advance 3D technology using OpenGL
  • View the Model as it was in the real world
  • Create individual parts like beams, slabs and see their exact placement in a rendered 3D model
  • Place various connections to pre-visualize the connection layout and define rules and parameters
  • Define new parametric shapes and store commonly used sizes in your library
  • Built-in libraries of Conceptual connections – no physical detailing; track down potential problems before they happen
  • Import, export and print in DXF, DWG, DGN, PDS and international standards IFC, CIS/2 etc.
  • Full range of CAD functions like mirror, rotate, copy etc.
  • Automatically generate drawings and reports anytime during the engineering design process
  • Seamless integration with the Tekla Structures Links
  • Customize final drawings with the Drawing Editor

Tekla Structures allows the user to apply and modify structural constraints to the analytical model within the physical modeling mode. The analytical model is used only for passing the information to the analysis engine and for viewing the analysis and design results. All modifications to the structure are made to the physical model.

> Analytical Model

Tekla Structures keeps the analysis models and GA drawings automatically up-to date with any changes in the physical model at the press of a button.  Although there are several applications that address the different facets of the engineering lifecycle (modelling, analysis and design, drafting, detailing, production control, estimation, etc.), the interoperability between these products is quite poor since the underlying mechanism for data transfer is importing and exporting static data. With Tekla Structures Modeler and you’re Structural software, users can finally enjoy a simple environment for everyday work in structural engineering.
