Project Report, Whonnock Office
Malcolm Muir

The Cerro Verde Sulfide Project, which we detailed for Schuff Steel has finally wrapped up.  For the most part this was a pretty satisfying job with just enough variation to keep it interesting.

Most of the Whonnock office is currently working through the UCDHSC Research Complex 2, located in Aurora, Colorado, which we are detailing for the Accero Division of Cives Steel.
This project, under Mike Mantil’s direction, is now moving along very quickly despite a somewhat slow start.  In fact we are pulling ahead of the designers, since they do not expect to release final design information for the penthouse area before April, and we are ready to move onto those areas now.

The remainder of the office is working with Moran Iron Works on the Monroe Unit # 3 SCR Project.

This is the second part of a project we did several years ago for the same fabricator and is progressing extremely well under Greg Stone’s direction

Project Report, Burnaby Office

The part of The Cerro Verdi Project for Schuff Steel being done in the Burnaby office is now complete.  I would like to thank Steven Chang, Tony Han and Joe McDonald and their crews for all the hard work and effort put forth….a job well done.

Allan Gliege’s team is in the final few details of the 3,100 Ton Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nevada for Fought and Company. Allan has worked closely with Tony Poppe of Fought, Scott Amick of Sellen and Heath Mitchell of PCSA to bring this Project to a successful conclusion.

The Vancouver Convention Center is finally off and running. With the Value Engineering complete for the Eastern Part of the Convention Center, we are now busy connecting and detailing. The Western part of the Convention Center is still being Value Engineered and is scheduled for release May 1, 2006.  Wojtek Jablkowski and his crew are in close coordination and consultation with Canron West Constructors (Fabricator, Erector), Glotman -Simpson (Structural Engineer), PCL (General Contractor) and the Musson Cattell Mackay Partnership (Architect).  Since our model is now the official document, we are continually updating and revising to the latest information available.

The 5200 Ton Citi Bank Project Phase 1 in Long Island, NY for Owens Steel, being detailed by Doug McGillvray and his team, is moving along well now.  This fast track job took considerable coordination and effort to get underway, especially the lower floors where the more complex moment and double Column connections gave our Programmers some interesting challenges.  It required some extra efforts from all parties to keep this project on schedule.

John Chai’s crew has completed the Dallas Trade Mart Expansion for North Texas Steel. Thanks again Bill Gigl…it is always a pleasure working with you.

The Comcast Center Project that Don Adair’s team has been trying to complete for Cives Northern Division is still ongoing.   It has been an uphill battle struggling daily to deal with revisions upon revisions with no end in sight.

In late December we were awarded the 4600 Ton Sprint Center in Kansas City for Schuff Steel Midwest (formally Havens Steel).   We are happy to be working again with Paul Devereaux of Mortenson.  John Chai and Allan Gliege are heading up this Project which is currently well underway and progressing nicely.

In March after we had completed the initial modeling portion of the 40,000 ton Goldman Sachs Head Quarters in New York City, DCM Erectors awarded Dowco approximately 67% of the detailing.  This fast track Project designed by Halcrow Yolles has been split between three detailing companies,  with Dowco taking the lead and doing the majority of the work.  Ken Mussato and Tony Han will be heading Dowco’s part and coordinating between the Engineer and the other detailing companies.

Snap shot from One Bryant Park, showing belt truss connection at the lower floors being erected at the beginning of this year. This typical joint after numerous design changes is finally in place.   Cornell Erectors are progressing well with no apparent problems.

Detailing for the upper tower however has come to a  due to lack of information for the 52nd floor and up.  The new set of revised customer drawings received in early February did not help resolve the missing information, and more RFIs have been created.   We expect this to be resolved shortly.

Clackamas Town Center, is a 2000 tons renovation and addition that was awarded to us from Fought & Co. in early February.   Paul Ledsham and his crew are well underway on this project and expect to complete this job by mid June.

Don Shaver and his group have another new job with tight schedule from Hirschfeld, the North Texas Tollway Plaza Canopies, with rolled plate columns and curved pipe truss canopies and AESS finish requirements.

Ashmont Station for Newport Industrial Fabrication is completed and out for approval. Paul Ledsham’s Harvard Labs for Ocean Steel is scheduled to have all drawings out for approval by the end of March, 2006.   Drawings for Tailing Thickening and Cyclone Station part of Cerro Verde for Schuff are back from approval.  Comments on Cyclone Station have been incorporated and drawings issued for shop.  Unfortunately, due to the fast track nature of the project, the Tailing Thickening area has been revised at approval and some members affected are already fabricated.  Field work drawings are being created and will go out shortly.

Despite the many challenges with the tight schedules we undertake, the cooperation of the fabricator and the engineer, helps alleviate the pressures we undergo leading to a successful conclusion of the work.

It has been almost 9 months since DowcoMax was conceived. We have experienced a few growing pains and expect we’ll have a few more but all in all, we are moving in the right direction.

DowcoMax has gone through a few staff changes, with 10 new employees being added to the roster since the beginning of March.  The new members consist of a new team leader, two checkers and seven detailers.  Most have Tekla Structure experience and with a little help from Sanjay, most were up and running shortly after arrival. Their addition has already been felt within the company and has contributed to the increase in daily production.

The quality of the drawings coming from DowcoMax has also been steadily improving each month.  All the Canadian project managers dealing with DowcoMax are now relying on their consistent and reliable production.  Why not, when you can send work off in the evening and have it complete and waiting for you when you come in the next morning?   They work while you sleep.  That has to be every manager’s dream!
