Congratulations to Merry Gong
by Yong (Holly) Liu

At Dowco we are always interested in the accomplishments of young people.  So much publicity is given to troubled youth, but there are many gifted, bright, hard working, young people in our midst who make us proud.   Merry Gong is one of them.   We would like to share with you her achievements.   Merry is the daughter of our employee Holly Li (Document Control, Burnaby.).

Merry graduated from Templeton Secondary School in 2005. She won the Governor General’s Bronze Medal, awarded to the top graduating student from each secondary school. She also won the 2005 Premier's Excellence Award, SFU’s Gordon M. Shrum Entrance Scholarship, the Coast Capital Savings Education Award, Miller Thompson Foundation National Scholarship, and others.

Merry achieved recognition for both academic excellence and community service.  In school, as top student in math and science enriched programs, she received many Subject Awards and Top-Scholar Award from Grades 9 to 12.  She obtained exceptional scores in various national math contests and also participated in school volunteer clubs such as Math Tutoring Club and Library Club.

Merry worked to benefit the community outside of school through volunteer works, e.g., as program leader for the Monday Madness program in Ray-Cam Co-operative Centre.   She was also treasurer of Templeton Leo Club, helping organize and fundraise for the building of Tinzaline, an African Primary School, and for the Canadian Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund. She also worked as a Peer Leader in an environmental stewardship program, Catching the Spirit, for three years.

Through balancing academic studies with volunteer work in school and community, Merry enhanced her time management , interpersonal, and leadership skills, becoming more confident and mature as a result.

She currently studys Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at SFU and volunteers in the university and community. Her goal is to study in the medical field.

Through the years, my greatest pleasure has been watching my daughter move up step by step.  As her mom, I wish her the best for her future. I would like to thank Mr. Hugh Dobbie for providing this opportunity to introduce and share my daughter’s accomplishments with my co-workers.
