dowco.com News - How to Troubleshoot ADSL
by Mike Leeson

If your ADSL has been working and suddenly stops, there are a few things you can check to determine where the problem has occurred.

Start by checking the lights on the ADSL Modem.  All ADSL modems will tell you whether they detect a problem with a red light.  The modem has a light labeled ADSL and a light labeled LAN.  If the ADSL light is out then the problem goes from the modem to the wall socket and out into the phone system.  If the LAN light is out, the problem is between the modem and the computer.
Once you have determined which way the problem lies, unplug and reconnect all the cabling in that direction.  Once that is done, turn the modem off and then on to reset it and see if it regains the connection.

If the ADSL light is out:  Once you have done a quick check of the cables and restarted the modem, it is time to call your service provider and see if there is a problem outside of your location.

If the LAN light is out: Restart your devices in order from the wall socket to the computer.  Turn the modem off and then back on.  Once it has the ADSL light, go to the next device connected by network cable.

If it is a router, make sure the cable from the modem is plugged into the WAN/INTERNET port on the back of the router.  Turn the router off and then back on.  Once the router is back on, restart the computer. If there is still no LAN light on the modem, call your service provider.
