Operations Corner

As the weather has improved, so it appears has the steel construction market in North America, with several large projects in the pipeline, including stadiums, high-rises, and convention centers. Unfortunately, prices have not improved, perhaps due to increased competition from companies in India and the Philippines. To retain our competitive edge, Dowco’s senior management are actively pursuing a number of commercial ventures and business relationships, as well as continuing to increase our team of highly-experienced detailers, checkers, and project managers.

The improved attendance at this year’s North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC), held in Montreal, also signals an improving market. This was a great opportunity to meet new people and catch up with old acquaintances. I was particularly excited to see an increasing number of sessions and discussions related to the Building Information Model (BIM) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). As many of you know, Dowco has been an active and vocal proponent of these new work processes for a number of years. Some of our recent projects using BIM and EDI include the Panama Museum of Biodiversity and the Millennium Park Project, both designed by Frank Gehry, and the Denver Art Museum.

I would also like to welcome all the members of the TSD team. Dowco merged with Toronto-based TSD late last year to form Dowco/TSD Consultants Ltd.
