Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Drafting Committee

In April 2005, I attended the CISC Drafting Committee Meeting in Montreal, chaired by Robert Beauchamp (of Datadraft.)

The Detailers’ Apprenticeship Program in Alberta is now in full swing. They basically use existing programs set up at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), which also includes classes in shop fabrication and erection. Approximately 70-80% of the training is done in-house. Quebec is also working on an Apprenticeship Program, while B.C. has used a different approach by working through the Applied Science Technologists & Technicians of B.C. (ASTTBC), and trying to bring a more professional approach to detailing.

CISC is leaning heavily on BC to join Alberta and Quebec to provide National Accreditation, and transferable recognition.

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI or Interoperability, as it is now being known) was also discussed. One pressing question was “Who owns the model?”   It was generally agreed that the Owner would own the model and use it for the life cycle of the building or structure. Prevailing thought is that the model governs the design drawings unless noted otherwise. There are 30 detailer members belonging to the CISC, and fabricators are being asked to use CISC detailers whenever possible, and to encourage other detailers to become members of the organization.
