North American Steel Construction Conference (April 1-4, 2009)
Hugh Dobbie, CEO

nascc Although the North American economy is in bad shape, you would not have known it from the attendance at NASCC. The steel conference was well attended and as usual, it was not possible to attend as many of the interesting sessions as one would want. Fortunately they were recorded, and will be accessible on the AISC web-site.

In addition to the educational seminars, NASCC provides an excellent networking venue. The conference dinner at the Corona Hacienda included a Mexican Rodeo with trick roping and high-speed horse manoeuvers.

I was asked to present a paper on the unlikely topic of "How to Get Rich in Detailing." Partly tongue in cheek, I presented the paper on Friday afternoon and was not anticipating a large attendance so was pleasantly surprised when between 60 and 70 showed up. A condensed copy of the paper was printed in the March issue of Modern Steel Construction.

When we began participating in NASCC more than twenty years ago, Dowco was the only detailer with a booth. This year, there were twenty-five (25) booths representing detailers, as well as several fabricator booths. For the past several years, Dowco has provided and staffed an island booth, to encourage clients to meet and relax on comfortable furniture. This has proven to be effective, as the booth has become a popular meeting place for networking.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff who attended and manned our booth.
