Announcing Dowco Educational Services Ltd…
Ron Cuthbert, Office Manager
Dowco Computer Systems Ltd. is now Dowco Educational Services Ltd. Over the last couple of years Dowco Computer Systems Ltd. unofficially moved into this arena of online education with the creation of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) approved course Detailing for Steel Construction. Most recently we've been working with Dowco Technology Services creating and launching the Tekla Basic training course. Today our focus is almost entirely on creating training material to service the Steel Detailing industry.
Known as the Dowco Online Learning Network, Dowco Educational Services Ltd. will be presenting a series of courses for online detailer training.
As an initiative of the AISC Committee on Steel Detailing, the course, Detailing for Steel Construction, was created to address the shortage of structural steel detailing technicians and technologists in the industry. This comprehensive course, developed by Dowco Educational Services and fully endorsed by the AISC, is an invaluable tool for detailing firms, fabricators, and any other firms that employ people to prepare and review structural shop drawings.
The Detailing for Steel Construction course is a self-paced, web-based course that allows the student to learn on their own time. The course takes up to 400 hours to complete and focuses exclusively on detailing fundamentals - there is no 3rd party detailing software such as Tekla required to complete this course. The students are guided through the material in sequence and tested at regular intervals to ensure they are mastering all the material presented. Only upon passing the tests are they allowed to proceed in the course. The AISC will issue a Certificate of Completion to all who complete the course. Upon completing a final exam, a Certificate of Proficiency will also be issued.
The Tekla Structures Basic Training course has been fully endorsed by Tekla Corporation. This course can take a Detailer with no knowledge of Tekla Structures and make them productive in 1 week. Dowco Technology Services has been Tekla's partner, reseller, and service provider of Tekla Structures for 12 years. This combined with Dowco's own training standards and real-life experiences have given Dowco the experience to create a fabulous course.
This course uses a practical, interactive method to teach the student Tekla Structures. It provides 40 hours of self-paced instruction and demonstrates Tekla's features and functionality in an interactive environment. The student is required to follow along by replicating steps on their own machine. Quizzes are presented at the end of each module as a valuable evaluation tool for the student. Any part or section of the course can be reviewed at any time as a refresher or for reference. This is a cost-effective alternative to off-site instruction or using your own staff to train. The course meets the need for getting detailers productive using Tekla Structures.
Dowco Educational Services is now well into development of our 3rd course that focuses on the design of connections for structural steel design. We first mentioned this course in the August 2008 publication of Details Magazine and you'll be please to know that we're still on target to launch in the front half of 2009. The course is recommended for senior detailers, checkers and project supervisors. Major sections cover: Bolted Connections, Bolted Tension Connections, Welded Connections, Beam Shear Connections, Eccentric Connections, Prying Action, Truss Connections, Moment Connections and H.S.S. Connections.
