Project Report: Toronto Office
Eric Lee
It has been a very busy summer in Toronto Office, with us managing over ten projects at one point, but finally it has narrowed down to five, with a new project under re-design.
One Bryant Park – Slow concrete pouring caused the erection to halt at the 12th floor. Detailing is complete up to the 51st Floor. Don Shaver and his crew are still waiting for missing information and connection designs. It looks like detailing will be complete by late September.
Goldman Sachs - Toronto office along with Burnaby office will together detail this high rise in Manhattan. Area 4 is assigned to Toronto office. The model is updated to the latest bulletin and we are presently waiting on DCM for connection design. This project is expected to be complete by spring 2007.
North Texas Tollway Plaza Canopies - a fast track, 14 week delivery job was awarded to us in early March. A few weeks later, during a conference call, we learned that Hirschfeld Steel was unable to get the pipes called for on the design drawings as material was only available in Germany. Many delays have impacted this project due to material substitutions and delays in responses to questions regarding fabric, lighting and catwalk details. The extensive 3D modeling has been very useful for detailing and visualizing the assembly of the plated support columns on this project. Forty percent of the work remains to be detailed, and we are waiting to hear on a potential change order that might set us back another 4 to 5 weeks.
Samsung Fab A2 – This 5,250 tons project consisting of trusses, columns, sway frames, bracings and purlins is another job from Hirschfeld Steel of TX. Center to center of building columns is 348’-0” plus 12’-0” overhang at each end. Trusses are 16’-6” deep at center of the building and shop assembled with field splices in various locations for easy transportation.
Kaynor Tech School – SteelFab of Connecticut awarded us this 750 tons school project. This job is not required until early October. The model is 90% completed and ready for connection. Project Leader Frank Collins is being challenged, dealing with a relatively new fabricator, where attention is required every step of the way to ensure the fabricator’s requirements comply properly with industry standards.
Fedex Hangar – This is another job awarded to us from Hirschfeld Steel, 10,000 tons of office, warehouse and hangar mix. The 25 foot deep roof trusses are being redesigned to 35 foot deep, which reduces the weight for the top and bottom chords and also eliminates chamber. New design drawings will be available in early September. Detailing is expected to be complete by March, 2007.
Ashmont Redline Station (Newport Fabrication), Iredell Memorial Hospital (Dave Steel), The Standard Hotel (Helmark Steel), Cristo Rey Jesuit High School (LeJeune Steel) and Clackamas Town Center (Fought and Company) are all in their final stages and should finish shortly. As previously stated, we have had twelve projects ongoing at the one time, so look forward to seeing the end of these jobs.
