After graduating from Britannia Secondary School in 1972, Walter enrolled in the Vancouver Institute's Structural Steel Detailing Program.

Walter found employment at Dominion Bridge (Vancouver) and furthered his education with industry-related courses at B.C.I.T.  When Dominion Bridge closed, he worked for Dowco and several other companies, before moving to freelance work. He then spent several years as partner in a BC detailing company, honing his management, estimating and design skills.

Walter rejoined Dowco in 1993.
